Introduction
Police-I Division functions as the cadre controlling authority in respect of Indian Police Service (IPS). Domestic and foreign trainings for police personnel are also coordinated in this division. The police personnel in recognition of their service are awarded Medals like President/Police Medals for Meritorious/ Distinguished service/ Gallantry, Prime Ministers award for life saving. This division has the administrative and financial control of two Central Police Organisations. These are Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad and North Eastern Police Academy, Shillong.

(A) Cadre Management of the Indian Police Service :
The Cadre management of the Indian Police Service includes appointment of the IPS officers through Regular Recruitment and by induction of State Police Officers on promotion. The IPS Officers are given basic training in SVPNPA and after successful completion of their training they are confirmed in-service. They are also allocated to various state cadres by this division. The strength and composition of each state IPS cadre is reviewed at stipulated intervals. The officers at the level from DIG to DG are empanelled for facilitating appointments on Central deputation. This division also maintains the ACRs of IPS Officers and deals with their service and vigilance matters.
(B)Award of Medals to the Police Personnel :
In order to recognize the outstanding service rendered by the Police personnel, they are awarded medals like Presidents Police Medals for Gallantry/Meritorious and Distinguished service, Prime Ministers life saving award.
(C)Training of Police Personnel :
The Government of India attaches great importance to Police Training. The officers belonging to the Indian Police Service are trained in SVPNPA, Hyderabad. The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) coordinates domestic training for police personnel and issues advisories on the subject to the states from time to time. The police personnel are also provided foreign training and are sent to countries like Japan, Singapore, USA and Italy to acquaint themselves with modern techniques of crime prevention, detection and investigation. Countries like USA are sending the teams of their trainers to India to impart police training to Indian Police personnel. This division is also interacting with the foreign countries for the purpose of mutual capacity building. The officers belonging to Nepal, Bhutan and other SAARC countries are being trained in our police training institutions.
(D) Management of Training and Police Research Institutes :
Police-I division exercises Administrative control over Central Police Research and Training Institutes namely, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad, North Eastern Police Academy, Shillong.
